Shampooing 101
Do you have a vigorous skin care routine you adhere to day + night? What about a hair + scalp routine?
Most of us have been taught the proper sequence of products, application, and routine for skin care; but, many of us lack the same knowledge to properly care for our hair + scalp.
Considering your scalp is an extension of your face the same care and management should be given in your daily hair routine. A healthy scalp will promote hair growth, shinier hair, easier styling, less split ends, and overall more luscious locks.
While there are many steps to a healthy scalp today we’ll be focusing on proper shampoo techniques.
CLEAN | SHAMPOO
Many clean shampoo lines, including Mr. Smith - our exclusive brand, eliminates harsh chemicals which strips the hair’s natural oils. Because of this it is essential to shampoo twice whenever you cleanse your hair.
DOUBLE SHAMPOO
1) With clean shampoos it’s imperative to thoroughly wet hair before adding shampoo. The water helps to activate the shampoo + create a sudsing effect.
2) Emulsify shampoo in hands creating a suds effect before applying to hair.
3) Using fingertips (or pads of fingers if you have long nails) gently scrub scalp in circular motion.
Your first wash will adhere to buildup, debris, products, + other surface containments, prepping it for the second wash.
Take note the first wash may not suds or lather.
DOUBLE SHAMPOO
4) Rinse thoroughly + repeat shampoo application.
5) With the second shampoo scrub gently with finger tips, paying close attention to behind the ears, back of neck, and middle of the back of the head. Many times these areas do not get a proper wash + can lead to bacteria and/or build up.
6) Gently rub excess shampoo through mid shaft to ends of hair.
7) Rinse completely + apply conditioner to end of hair. Rinse.
Q+A:
How often should I shampoo? How often you shampoo is dependent on many factors… what color services you currently have, sebum (oil) production, do you workout daily, do you currently have scalp issues; such as eczema or psoriasis, what your daily styling routine consist of, and your overall hair goals. We recommend talking with your hairstylist to come up with a wash routine that suits your lifestyle.
Can I shampoo everyday? Mr. Smith haircare is safe for daily washing, it doesn’t strip the hair of natural oils, is color safe, and works great to prep hair for styling products. If you choose to wash every other day or extend it longer we do recommend daily scalp stimulation through brushing.
I have fine hair and it gets oily by the end of the day, will clean shampoos work for me? Clean shampoos can be tricky for fine and/or none color treated hair. Double shampoos will help the longevity of oil prevention. With time your sebum (oil) production may reduce as your scalp begins to adjust to the non-stripping attributes of clean shampoos.
Is clean shampoos color safe? Picking a color safe shampoo is key to any type of hair cleanser when you have color treated hair.
